my mob meet at calicut

I went to calicut the day before the mob meet. all the arrangements were done perfectly, well almost. it was held at the Taj hotel.

on second Saturday November, the mob meet day, the registration counter and the www.mobmit.com registration counter were set by 1600 hrs. the mobsters of calicut were all there. and mit guests started coming in from all parts of kerala and a few from tamilnadu and karnataka.

I made sure I was the first for the registration, just incase the convener wanted to award a prize for the first registration, it was not to be. singles were rs.300 and couples rs.450 and kids on the house. most of the elder mitians encouraged the idea of mobmit homepage and was interested in the registration. it was interesting to note all the mitians registered remembered the first year room mates even though some forgot the room no and block no. everybody wanted to look for an mitian friend online. almost all put the comment as "best days of my life." I too think so.

the registrations poured but all were seen at the bar counter which was started simultaneously. convener had a tough time bringing the crowd to the official function. by this time prof.CNS, now retired an settled at calicut and prof.KRV, official representative of the princi had come to the diaz. the eldest member of calicut and the convener also decorated the diaz. also was a lecturer , oops, I forgot the name, accompanied krv.

two mitains who started the mob meet when they went for a drink on a bar in early 60s, were given appreciation for their good mit work. I was at the bar when the others mitian was addressing. prof.varma brought greetings from the princi and talked in detail about the new mit ex students association which has been registered at mit manipal. he requested all to join in. if you want to get details as to how to join, email to saru@vsnl.com. he also talked about the new developments at mit. if I remember right books worth one crore was bought to the library and some 600 periodicals were there in there. and also new courses and new buildings. he also talked about a new split course in which the student does first two years in mit manipal and the rest two years in the us. no more gres and gmats.

then I had a chance to address the gathering. I talked about www.MOBMIT.com. the registration stood then at 1432. all appreciated with a big applause. I informed the gathering that the mobmit t shirts sold there were to support the expenses of the site which then stood at rs.30000/- debit. (anybody listening) thanked the 7 mitians who has paid capitation fee. requested prof.krv to make princi agree to make www.mobmit.com an official alumni site of mitians by giving a link to our site at the homepage of manipal institute of technology.

the convener mr.anju said thanks to the sponsors only. and hi to the mitians.

by this time the spirits were high. there was games arranged for the ladies and kids. it was a nice idea, esp. since when the male boasted around about their mit life which the ladies must have heard a hundred times. housie was nice too. time was 2000 hrs. by then.

the food was served for the early birds and a few folks to reach home. the rock show was the much expected by the mitians which became a turn off when the kids came to stage to play hot numbers. but then mitians took over and they went off with fear. however the dance floor was full, both dancers and singers made merry, mit style.

I had decided to write about the meet before i went there, but i cant remember the last part. it ended as a big hangover the next day when i took my train journey back home.

if you can make it to the next kerala mob meet on second Saturday of 2000, at kottayam, kerala. all are welcome.
